The term “civil rights” has a very widespread usage, and may mean different things to different people.  At its root, civil rights is the fundamental idea that all citizens have equal protection under the law and an equal opportunity to the privileges of citizenship, regardless of race, gender, sex, age, disability, ethnicity, national origin, religion, and sexual orientation.  In its broadest sense, civil rights implies a freedom to live one’s life free from restraint or oppression, immune from the arbitrary exercise of authority.
